Welcome to the official Hikers of Iredell Club Wiki! The Hikers of Iredell Club is a social interest group in Iredell County North Carolina targeted to trail hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. The club is primarily focused on day hikes ranging from 3 to 20 miles, but the club also infrequently facilitates hikes beyond the normal day hike driving range with over night trips. The group tries to offer a variety of difficulty levels for both beginners hikers, and hikers seeking a challenge. The club also encourages participation in community advancement including participation in local greenway clean up efforts and trail maintenance efforts with the local state park system.
In April of 2008, two newspaper articles were published notifying the public of a new club. On April 24, 2008, the club was founded. The initial meeting took place at Trinity Episcopal Church in Statesville, NC where it continues to meet to this day. Members registered on paper forms but no dues were collected to join. Official membership of the club was not formalized until early 2010.
On April 26, 2008, a companion site iredellhikingclub.com was built chronicling the club's activities. This site maintains a list of hikers with miles hiked enabling the club track participation trends. The site publishes upcoming hike lists and information regarding itinerary such as trails used and difficulty ratings.
On May 4, 2008, the club began its first hike, hiking the 5-mile Lake Shore Loop plus a spur trail to the group picnic area, totaling 6.5 miles at Lake Norman State Park.
April 2010, the club initiated an annual membership fee of $24.00. Renewal fees are later set to $10.00 per year.
