Doughton Park, formerly known as Bluff Park or simply "The Bluffs," is a park in Wilkes and Alleghany County. This park spanning an area between Longbottom Road outside Traphill and the Blue Ridge Parkway features a unique primitive trail system. Conceived in 1934, the park remains the largest recreation area on the Blue Ridge Parkway today.
The concept of Doughton Park was spearheaded by Stanley Abbott in 1934. Originally known as Bluff Park, it's creation was the result of land acquisition in 1937 by the National Park Service; the original tract was 5,410.3 acres of land in Wilkes and Alleghany County.
Construction of the Bluff Park facilities began in September 1937 when Civilian Conservation Corps camp NP-21 was established.
Major restoration efforts in 1941 ensured Brinegar Cabin and Caudill were not lost to neglect. In 1949, Bluffs Lodge opened offering 24 rooms for park visitors along with a central fire pit.
The park was renamed Doughton Park in 1953 in honor of North Carolina Congressman and Blue Ridge Parkway advocate Robert L. Doughton.
Further expansion of the park's facilities were denied in the 1960's amid protests by the local tourism industry and other problems with the proposed expansions.
In 1969, an edict by National Park Service Director George B Hartzog, blocked Doughton Park's inclusion as a Wilderness Area under the newly created Wilderness Act.
The National Park Service commenced a second restoration of the cabins in 1975, and additional restoration in 2001.
